Baby Sounds

At birth, an infant’s brain is developing rapidly and the experiences we provide encourage brain connections that increase lifelong literacy and language skills.  To develop these skills in infants, Blue Ribbon books selected by the literacy experts at Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library contain characteristics specific to their age appropriateness including:

  • Vision – bright, big, colorful
  • Touch – board pages
  • Rhyme and rhythm
  • Simple – easy to use
  • Minimal text – point and say
  • Playful sound
  • Nurture – attachment- lullaby themes

In addition to promoting age-appropriate language and literacy skills, books are chosen to promote a love of reading and learning; regard for diversity of people, their roles, culture, and environment; promotion of self-esteem and confidence, appreciation of art and aesthetics.

Blue Ribbon selections for children born in 2017 are:

With our final 2016 book mailing in December, we have sent 56,934 books to children throughout South Carolina.

If we lined the books up end to end, the line would be almost 10 miles long!
